Howe, Nagelsmann, Pochettino: can anyone end Manchester United’s doom loop?

28 October 2026 at 21:00

Even an elite coach would surely struggle at Old Trafford amid the executive chaos and with an unfit, uneven squad

In January 2014 the 13th series of Celebrity Big Brother aired in the UK, the show so popular that its run time was extended by five days before a public vote anointed Jim Davidson the winner. Then, two years later when Brexit happened, people wondered where their tolerant country had gone, lamenting the ephemeral spirit of London 2012 as though the 2011 riots were some kind of fever dream, not a desperate response to decades of structural and institutional racism exacerbated by the cruelty of unnecessary austerity.

The truth is that if security is quickly upended, it was built on quicksand to begin with. Which brings us to Manchester United, easing effortlessly from an uplifting third-place finish to some of the worst football in their history.

‘This isn’t supposed to happen’: giant-slaying Fleetwood revels in fairytale Arsenal win

Fishing town in disbelief the morning after its footballing minnows beat mighty Arsenal on penalties

On a wet and windy night on the north-west coast of England, a League Two side sensationally knocked the Premier League champions out of the Carabao Cup. But this is not just a fairytale story of giant-slaying; Fleetwood Town and Arsenal have an unlikely history that stretches back long before Tuesday night’s game.

Arsenal played at their iconic Highbury stadium until 2006, and Fleetwood’s ground has the same title, being named after Highbury Avenue, the adjoining street.

Using statistical techniques, a new study has arrived at a harrowing estimate: Three of four retired pro football players most likely had C.T.E. at death.

Max Dowman’s Fleetwood fracas leaves him, Arsenal and Arteta red-faced

28 October 2026 at 16:16

Teenager was maybe harshly sent off in the Carabao Cup tie but his reaction was a mistake he will learn from, while his manager might also have regrets

Mikel Arteta’s reaction said it all. As Max Dowman trudged towards the touchline after becoming the youngest player sent off in a League Cup match at 16 years and 300 days, the Arsenal manager could not help himself.

Arms folded across his chest like an angry father who has caught his teenage son sneaking in after midnight, Arteta leaned over and aimed a few choice words in Dowman’s direction before the forward headed sheepishly down the tunnel. What he said remains unknown, although that hasn’t stopped the amateur lip-readers speculating on social media. “Get in the changing room. Now,” appears the most likely guess.

Fernandes tells Carrick he is committed to turning season around in clear-the-air talks

28 October 2026 at 15:47
  • Manchester United captain expected to return to lineup

  • Squad have positive meeting with under-pressure coach

Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes held clear-the-air talks on Tuesday after the Manchester United captain criticised the manager’s tactics last week, with him now expected to start at Chelsea on Saturday.

Carrick and Fernandes met before training on Tuesday morning at United’s Carrington training base. The 32-year-old, it is understood, offered the manager assurances that he is fully committed and intent on trying to turn the team’s season around. There was also a squad meeting with Carrick at which the rest of the players made the same vow.

Kylian Mbappé’s China crisis shows how sensitive Mao’s legacy remains | Rebecca Bailey

28 October 2026 at 13:00

Real Madrid forward was dropped by brands for comments Chinese media generally steered clear of outlining

It’s been a bad start to the week for the Kylian Mbappé. The France forward missed out on joining the elite roster of Ballon d’Or winners and instead became the latest high-profile addition to a far less illustrious list – that of foreign brands and individuals charged with “hurting the feelings of the Chinese people”.

The saga began when a video of the Real Madrid player making light of a meme involving him and China’s former leader Mao Zedong began spreading.

Lise Klaveness: ‘Certainly there are people that can challenge Infantino’

28 October 2026 at 11:00

Norwegian federation president distances self from Fifa presidency but believes governing body can be reformed

As the rain whips around Oslo’s government quarter, Lise Klaveness is shielding herself from the wind, trying to work out tactics. “Of course we cannot probably do everything alone, but we have a voice, we have the right to speak, we have the right to suggest, so let’s see,” she says. “We will at least try to be a spearhead.”

The president of the Norwegian Football Federation wants to re-engage Fifa, and other governing bodies, on the topic of remedy. A slightly arcane aspect of human rights policy in normal times, the importance of remedy became very clear in the aftermath of the World Cup in Qatar, when the families of those injured or killed in the work that led up to the tournament were left without financial compensation after Fifa chose to direct a legacy fund elsewhere.
